Andrew Strauss proved to be the star turn at yesterday's latest London Sporting Club monthly lunch just one week before the Ashes series gets underway in Brisbane. The former England player and twice Ashes-winning captain is now the Director of Cricket for England in ultimate charge of the team as they face Australia next week, but before flying down under Strauss took time to entertain us all of stories of his times as a player, captain and now boss of English cricket. In front of another packed house in Mayfair Strauss was happy to talk on all subjects, from the epic 2005 Ashes victory, to losing 5-0, to winning 3-1 down under, to quitting as captain, Kevin Pietersen and, latterly, Ben Stokes. Also in the audience was Middlesex and Engand cricketer Nick Compton, Olympic rowing gold medallist Greg Searle and Commonwealth silver medallist high jumper Martyn Bernard. Hugh Cornwell, The Stranglers lead singer, and an avid cricket fan as well, was also present at what proved to be another fantastic afternoon at the London Sporting Club.
